Bowen Fascial Release Technique & Scar Work
Fascial layers surround every cell, nerve and organ in the body and can therefore have an impact on all the body systems. It forms webs and sheets of connective tissue which need water and movement to function properly. If, for whatever reason, there is a blockage or damage to any of the fascial layers movement and function of the body can be restricted, this can lead to swelling or pain.
It is best to allow around 90 minutes for a first consultation and treatment. I will need a full medical history and take measurements of movement and activity thresholds. We will also talk about any lifestyle, dietary or emotional issues which may be affecting your health.
Treatments will depend on what your problem is, so will therefore be tailored on the day to be the most appropriate for you at that time.
Lymphatic Drainage using the Bowen Fascial Release Technique
This is a gentle, hands-on therapy which can be performed through light clothing but for lymphatic work I prefer to work directly on the skin. Depending on the person and the severity of their condition It is recommended that a treatment programme runs for three to four weeks spaced 7 to 10 days apart. After the initial consultation, a session will usually take one hour.
The biggest difference between Bowen and other therapies is the breaks in treatments. I perform a few ‘moves’ on specific areas of the body then stand to one side or leave the room. To explain the reasoning behind this I like to give this example:
If someone gives you something to read and talks to you at the same time you are unlikely to take any of the information in properly. When I perform the ‘moves’ this is me ‘talking’ to your body; giving it an instruction. Your body is more likely to accept, and start to work on, that instruction if you are in your own space with as few distractions as possible.
Sharon Wheeler’s Scar Work
This work generally takes longer, around 90 minutes, with treatment plans dependent upon the result of the initial session.
When we acquire a scar, for whatever reason, it can have a bigger impact on the parts of the body we can’t see than those we can. Working on those scars, and the area around them, can help to clear adhesions, improve movement and restore a connection to a part of the body which might feel alien due to the scarring. This can improve the psychological impact of the scars and the reasons they are there, returning us to a better sense of ourselves.
Water makes up roughly 70% of the human body and is vital for the fascial layers to function properly. Everyone having any treatment is advised to drink plenty of water, as this helps the fascia stay mobile, the lymphatic system cleanse the body of toxins and the blood to take oxygen and nutrients round the body, including the brain. It helps enormously with the digestive system, keeping it mobile and helps kidneys function as they filter up to 200 litres of fluid a day.
